May 10, 2023 - May 11, 2023 | Advisory Board, Washington, DC
Development leaders face strong headwinds in 2023. Economic pressures are squeezing hospital margins and donor portfolios. Ongoing disruption throughout healthcare — once a relatively predictable field — means fluctuating resources and morphing funding priorities. Key clinical allies are exhausted from a prolonged pandemic and health reform turmoil; core development staff keep burning out and turning over. Yet, even now, fundraisers are expected to produce reliably excellent returns.
In this environment, it is far too easy for chief development officers to underplay the power of their own role. But, now is precisely the time for CDOs to take a hard look at their own skills and stamina. Whether they seek to powerfully lead their teams through a challenging time or make lasting contributions to the field, development leaders must become resilient, empowered, and adaptive. In this highly interactive session, we will discuss essential new competencies and mindsets as well as consider different models of best-in-class development leadership.
Even the most skilled foundation leader cannot succeed alone, however. Fundraising allies, particularly physicians and board members, have always been vital to the major gifts enterprise. With changes to the health landscape becoming more permanent, it’s fair to wonder: Which parts of our ally engagement playbooks still work? Are there effective new practices to try? And, how can we broaden our circle of allies to engage those in emerging areas like health equity? Our other sessions will focus on these questions.
This in-person, leadership-only event will build off Advisory Board’s research to foster peer-to-peer learning and take attendees through powerful exercises for their own organization.
